I am a big fan of using adhesives and always happy to see wood glue squeeze out when clamps are tightened. A damp rag removes the excess - and remaining glue will easily sand off during the next step. One great trick I learned long ago is shown in the top center and far right photos. Prior to sanding a joint smooth it helps to strike pencil lines lightly across both pieces. When the marks are sanded away the pieces are perfectly flat.
